Market Outlook: 2023

    | January 25, 2023

2022 was a challenging year for investors as both stocks and bonds experienced declines. The stereotypical portfolio made up of 60% stocks and 40% bonds had its worst year since 1937. As we flip ahead to a new year, some of the risks we faced heading into 2022, such as elevated valuations among stocks and speculative trading among ‘meme’ stocks and cryptocurrency seem to have subsided. However, the New Year will bring its own set of risks given that inflation remains a wild card, there are indications that the probability of an economic recession is growing, geopolitical risks are elevated, and expectations around corporate earnings appear too optimistic.
